"Fassbinder's big budget production for the international art house market was originally filmed in English but subsequently dubbed into German. The story, a complex interplay between melodrama and history, is based upon the autobiography of Lale Andersen who became the Nazi-sponsored singer of 'Lili Marleen', the song adopted by both German and Allied servicemen during World War II. Like Maria Braun, Wilkie is apolitical, practical and basically concerned only with her love for Robert, the son of a Jewish upper class family. She sings for the Nazis and helps the underground resistance. Robert is a 'realist' who ultimately follows the imperatives for his class background. This is one of Fassbinder's most accessible films which resembles Maria Braun in representing love as based on separation, rupture and nonfulfillment. However, here love is objectified in the form of the song which contains and objectifies it." . "fiction dramatique (fiction)" . . . . . . . . . . . . "Film wojenny" . . . . . . (Quelle: Umschlag)." .
