Physicians' attitudes toward elder suicide

Open All Close All

http://schema.org/description

  • "The hypothesis was that physicians would treat elderly suicidal patients differently than they would another age group. Twenty male physicians in a circumscribed locale were interviewed with regard to treatment modality, attitudes about suicide in general, and the elderly in particular. They were also asked to state their opinions about legalization of euthanasia, assisted suicide and the presence of mental illness in elder suicide. the sample was split into two groups; each having more or less than 16.5 years in practice. It was found that the group with less than 16.5 years in practice tended to be more positive about elder suicide and the right to die, in general. Both groups were likely to treat the elderly and younger patients the same with regard to modality. (ie: hospitalization, counseling, etc.)."
  • "In order to provide a context for this study, historical material is presented with regard to suicide and the treatment of the elderly. Factors deemed responsible for elder suicide are presented, as well as an overview of recent writings on the subject by ethicists, advocates, caregivers and the elderly themselves."
  • "This study of Physicians' Attitudes Toward Elder Suicide is a preliminary attempt to discern the underlying beliefs that give rise to particular behaviors in medical practice. At this time of this writing, no previous study of this kind has been undertaken with regard to physicians as a group; only material of an anecdotal nature existed in the literature."
