Touch of evil (Motion picture)

One of Orson Welles' few attempts at film noir, Touch Of Evil opens with a remarkable tracking shot that establishes the mood for the remainder of the film. The film's controversial themes of police corruption, racism and sexual ambiguity, were out of keeping with the moralistic zeitgeist of 1950's America, resulting in minimal success at the box office. This was Orson Welles' fifth Hollywood film and the last film he made in the U.S. before embarking on an international existence making non Hollywood films with both his own money and European support. Touch of Evil was attacked by the U.S. press as pulp fiction trash, yet the film's reception in Europe was encouraging, (Best Picture Brussels Film Festival) possibly leading Welles to the conclusion that his career would find more success overseas.

  • "Hank Quinlan is a police captain in a cesspool of corruption, a city on the Mexican-American border. He manipulates evidence in pursuit of his notions of justice. The bravura visual style creates a nightmare world more effectively than any preceding film noir. If Kiss Me Deadly is the climax of the initial noir style, this study of obsession with power and its corrupting effects (a recurring Wellesian theme) is perhaps its epitaph."@en
