Improved preaching through personal analysis

Every preacher can be a better preacher. There is always room for improvement. But for consistent improvement to occur, a plan for evaluation is recommended. The preacher must be aware ofweaknesses. In many areas oflife it is possible to take personal inventory and evaluate oneself. Why not practice the same discipline in preaching? Could not self-evaluation and personal goal-setting lead to improved preaching? Improvement implies a standard. The worthy goal of better preaching requires a standard of good preaching. To set this standard, preaching is analyzed and reduced to its core elements. These are determined to be the content of the sermon, its ability to connect with the listeners, and the element of spiritual life. A good sermon must proclaim the truth of Scripture. A good sermon must be relevant to those who hear it. The preaching of a good sermon becomes a supernatural event. A group of pastors was questioned concerning their efforts for improvement. A number of these pastors volunteered to participate in a six-week project for improvement through self-analysis. The results of the survey and the experiences of those who actually did the personal review are explained and analyzed. From these experiences an improved plan for personal analysis has been assembled.
