In the illustrious history of the Fishers, a family of entertainers, there are two young boys named George. One is a peculiar but endearing 11-year-old boy, raised backstage in 1970s England; the other, a garrulous ventriloquist's dummy, a favorite traveling act of the British troops in WWII. With the dummy lost and longforgotten, the two Georges know nothing of each others existence--until a series of events brings them together in a search to uncover the family's deepest secrets. George (the boy) is away at the Harry Potter-esque Upside School for Boys, where his quiet demeanor and aversion to sport casts him as an outsider. When he gets word that his beloved great-grandmother has died, George heads out on a quest to learn about her past as a world-famous ventriloquist and, with it, the family's curious history. Meanwhile, George Fisher (the dummy) lays silent and abandoned in the family's dusty attic. With no voice of his own--but with plenty to tell-- George begins to pen his life story: from his beginnings as a humble block of wood, to his rise to vaudeville fame, to his journey to his ultimate resting place. Weaving the boy's tale and the puppet's memoirs, BY GEORGE unveils the fascinating Fisher family-- its weak men, its dominant women, its immortal boys, and its shocking secret.
