Marie-Ange Hawkins had a very priviledged childhood in a beautiful french chateau, but when Marie-Ange is just eleven a tragic accident puts an end to her idyll. Orphaned and alone, she is sent to America to live with her great-aunt in Iowa, a woman who resents her deeply, and who works her hard on the farm.
