Lily has been abandoned in a Birmingham slum and she endures a childhood of loneliness and loss. At 18, she applies for a post as nanny with the family of a Captain Fairford, a soldier in north India. Captain Fairford orders a Daimler car, which is brought out by a motor mechanic, Sam Ironside.
