  • "While on a 47-city author tour to promote his book Downsize this on behalf of Random House, Michael Moore visits the corporate offices of companies in each city that are downsizing, laying off workers, using prison labor, and moving jobs overseas, where they employ child labor. He also visits and interviews laid off workers, low-paid workers who are trying to organize, and women whose welfare benefits have been cut. Cities visited include: Centralia, Illinois, home of Payday Candybars (Leaf Centralia); Des Moines, Iowa, where bookstore workers at the local Borders are trying to organize; Rockford, Illinois, where a woman in the book-signing line has just been laid off her job selling Ford automobiles; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Johnson Controls has just closed its Humboldt facility and moved it to Mexico, and where Manpower International, the temp agency, has become the number one employer in the country; Madison, Wisconsin, where he accompanies women whose welfare benefits have just been cut to the office of Governor Tommy Thompson to ask about corporate welfare to General Motors; Minneapolis/St. Paul, where Pillsbury has received 11 million dollars in corporate welfare; Chicago, where he is interviewed by Studs Terkel; Cincinnati, where Proctor & Gamble has laid off 13,000 people since 1993 despite making 6 billion dollars in profits; and Portland, Oregon, where he meets with Philip H. Knight, Chairman of Nike, to ask why Nike shoes are all made in Indonesia by teenage girls paid less than forty cents an hour. When Knight asserts that Americans don't want to make shoes, Moore organizes a large crowd of citizens of Flint, Michigan, who all assert they would like to have jobs making Nike shoes. The Big One is Moore's suggestion for a new name for the United States. Garrison Keillor appears briefly in the Minneapolis/St.

(Quelle: Umschlag)."
