The history of the Negro Church

Traces the influence of the black church in America from colonial times through the early twentieth century. Describes the origins of religious instruction for a race characterized as "neglected," traces the numerous sectarian movements and details the establishment of the most prominent black denominations. He writes of how, following the Civil War, the church took on many other functions in the black community: religious center, Chamber of Commerce, educational facility and social center. Because the black ministry was one of the highest stations available to a black leader, Woodson includes short biographies of significant church members.
