Figures of finance capitalism writing, class, and capital in the age of Dickens
Focusing on a group of mid-Victorian narratives by major middle-class writers, this book illustrates the centrality of finance capitalism to the social imagination of the middle-class when the first mass market for the novel was consolidated.
"This book brings into focus a group of mid-Victorian narratives by major middle-class writers in which the workings of finance capitalism are prominently featured, and reads this interest in finance capitalism in the context of middle-class misgivings about a class system still dominated by a patrician elite. In this regard, the interactions of two important mid-century developments are highlighted - on the one hand the consolidation of a mass market for middle-class literature that resulted in a tremendous increase of the social authority of the (middle-class) novel, and on the other hand the novelistic attention to the hierarchical mid-Victorian class system, within which finance capitalism came to be commonly regarded as a gray area of middle-class ideologies and identities. The book illustrates the centrality of finance capitalism to the mid-Victorian middle-class social imagination by discussing a selection of major Victorian texts (by Dickens, Gaskell, Thackeray and Macaulay) and by drawing on several new perspectives on British history (as offered in the work of historians such as Tom Nairn, David Cannadine, P.J. Hain and A.G. Hopkins).; Indebted in part to Pierre Bourdieu's revival of the idea of literary sociology, the book articulates the basic coordinates for a new sociology of mid-Victorian literary field and its negotiations of the contemporary field of power (and primarily the class system)."
