  • "Collection includes writings and correspondence by and to Arthur Hugh Clough. The writings consist of a draft of a new stanza and the revised fifth stanza of the poem "Qui Laborat, Orat"; and an autograph manuscript of the poem "Say Not, the Struggle Nought Availeth," with a sonnet on the verso, beginning: "O'Brien, most disconsolate of men." The correspondence consists of 13 letters to William Allingham, and part of one letter from Allingham to Clough. The letters range in date from 1849-1861. There is also a photocopy of a letter from Clough to William Edmonstoune Aytoun, the original of which was given to Winston Churchill in 1941, and which contains Clough's poem "Say Not, the Struggle Nought Availeth," which Churchill quoted in his address of April 27, 1941."
