The Jack Benny program. 1961-10-22, Waukegan show

Broadcast from Waukegan, Illinois. The program begins with footage of Waukegan. Don Wilson introduces Jack Benny and reviews the history of contruction of junior high schools in Waukegan; the third one is being named after Jack Benny. The glee club sings the alma mater, ending with 'Hail Jack Benny High.' Benny introduces Dennis Day, who is not impressed, since he has lots of schools all over the country named after him ('day schools'). He sings If ever I would leave you. Don brings out a little old lady who sat next to Jack in the sixth grade; she and Jack are the only two people left from their class. The glee club, Jack, and Don do a singing commercial for State Farm; Jack kisses one of the girls in the glee club. Don presents the mayor of Waukegan. The city plans to seal Benny mementoes into the cornerstone: his baby shoes; the receipted bill from the doctor who delivered him, not paid until 1959; his first toy, a cash register; and the (broken) baton used to conduct Benny in his first violin concert. Don introduces a captain from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, who has a copy of Jack's service record to put into the cornerstone; first, however, he needs to check it. The mayor comes out again to present Jack with a scroll, but is interrupted by the captain, who has discovered that Jack has never been discharged from the Navy. "The war was over, so I went home!" exclaims Jack. Since he has been AWOL for 47 years, SP's arrive to drag him off to serve out his term.
