The seven ages

"Each segment is preceded by a title and each is followed by a scene depicting the stage in life mentioned. The basic idea of the film is secondary because the producer-director-cameraman, Porter made the film as a series of short scenes in which to work out some primary photographic problems. These were: reflected light, increasing light intensity, as well as back and side lighting. All of these problems are brought out in the film, such as in the instance of the old couple in front of the fireplace. The only source of light is the sun reflected through the fireplace"--Early motion pictures / Kemp R. Niver.
