Reminiscences of the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1930's
Prof. Maurice Goldhaber, Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, was accepted by Lord Rutherford in 1933 as a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory, then the foremost laboratory in nuclear physics, where a year earlier James Chadwick had discovered the neutron. Many important discoveries followed each other in quick succession. Their apparatus was simple, the time from conception to execution of an experiment could often be measured in weeks, and the hot pursuit of an idea was taken for granted. Prof. Goldhaber discusses some of the work done at that time until he left for the United States after Rutherford's death.
