- ""At the time of the United States' entry into World War I, Amos Crow is dogcatcher in the little river town of Buford, Tennessee; he is so kind-hearted that he boards all his captive canines rather than kill them. His pal, Willie, decides to enlist after being chided for his lack of patriotism by Camilla, cook in the home of Mary Jane Robinson, daughter of an aristocratic family. Amos is rejected by the Army because of his feet, but manages to get in line with recruits bound for France, along with his dog, Deep Stuff. At a camp in France, Mary Jane, now a YMCA hostess, breaks off with Captain Davis, who is unmasked as a German spy, and Amos and Willie promise to find Ted for her. In rescuing Ted from a dugout, they learn of a surprise attack; they send Deep Stuff back with a message, but he is missing upon their return.
