"Arlo versucht, dem Vietnamkrieg zu entgehen - und auch dem College, als er erkennt, dass ihm dort selbst im Musikunterricht jede fantasievolle Idee ausgetrieben werden soll. Trampend macht er sich gen Westen auf und besucht seine Freunde Ray und Alice, die eine ehemalige Kirche in eine Hippie-Kommune verwandelt haben. Arlo ist von der dortigen liebevollen, unkomplizierten Atmosphäre fasziniert. Die Kirche ist Treffpunkt der Blumenkinder: ein Platz zum Feiern, Singen, Lieben und Diskutieren, Alice hat inzwischen auch ein Restaurant eröffnet. Nachdem Arlo seinen sterbenskranken Vater Woody in New York besucht hat, kehrt er zu den Hippies zurück und provoziert wegen illegal abgeladenen Mülls einen maßlosen Großeinsatz der lokalen Polizei. Doch seine Tat erweist sich als Glücksfall: Arlos Kriminalakte macht ihn "wehrunwürdig" und verhindert seine Einberufung in den Vietnamkrieg - obwohl er doch bei der Musterung durch sein "Ich will töten"-Geschrei entgegen seiner Absicht, einen Irren zu mimen, positiv aufgefallen war.
