Visualisation and the common operational picture Visualisation et modèle commun opérationnel

This workshop brought together individuals who use common operational picture (COP) systems, who develop them, and who make such systems more usable and effective. Within NATO, there is a need to co-ordinate complex operations across nations, theatres, and branches (land, sea, air). A common operational picture (COP) provides shared understanding of the battlespace to improve responsiveness and provide decision dominance. The core objective of this workshop was to have users talk with developers and researchers. The workshop was a forum for commanders and staff officers to describe the pros and cons of current tactical systems, which should help guide future military visualisation and COP research and development. The aim was multidisciplinary, since both technological and human factors professionals innovate and collaborate to improve visualisation systems. The presentations, discussions, and working group reports illuminated many approaches toward improving visualisation in future military systems. The Technical Evaluator also provided many illuminating summary comments in his evaluation. We list what in our opinion were particularly important findings but we encourage the interested reader to examine the other documents in the proceedings for necessary elaboration.--Executive summary.
