Globalization and the reform of the international banking and monetary system

This book deals with one of the most crucial issues of our time: the need for successful monetary and banking reform. It gives an in-depth analysis of the origins, nature and consequences of the multiple aspects of the current systemic crisis and makes key recommendations for creating reform. Written by an international group of outstanding experts, this book proposes that the single most important task now is to start building a new, rule-based international monetary system. It argues for: the need for a better balance between competition and solidarity at national and international levels the need for the rollback of monetary nationalism and for a return of monetary internationalism reducing the scope and attractiveness of financial speculation and of artificial risk creation and the return of the banking sector to its core functions serving both savers and investors the emphasis on transparency and quality of corporate governance the importance of pursuing trade liberalization the convergence of interests of all countries in an open, liberal international economic order and in sustainable development.
