  • "War Relics and Reminiscences constitutes an extensive military and social history of the First New York Mounted Rifles, a cavalry unit attached to General Benjamin Butler's Army of the James. The Mounted Rifles participated in relatively few major engagements; among the lesser battles and skirmishes referred to are Deserted House (January 1863), Longstreet's Siege of Suffolk (May 1863), Bottom's Bridge (February 1864), Drewry's Bluff or Fort Darlington (May 1864) and the Darbytown Road (October 1864). Regular army activities such as picket, orderly and courier duty, and scouting patrols are described."
  • "The manuscript and printed works in Series IV include several beautiful examples of Cronin's hand illustrations. The series contains two printed copies of The Evolution of A Life, Described in the Memoirs of Major Seth Eyland with marginal pen drawings and watercolors; portraits of Confederate soldiers mentioned in the Memoirs of Major W. W. Goldsborough, of the Confederate Army; illustrations for Joseph Rodman Drake's The Culprit Fay and an 1835 edition of Drake's poems; a specially illustrated Bibliography Relating to the Works Hand Illustrated by David Edward Cronin; and an engrossed and illuminated manuscript on "The Vest Mansion, its Historical Significance and Romantic Associations as Confederate and Union Headquarters, 1862-1865"."
  • "The David Edward Cronin Papers consist of five volumes (2.5 lin. ft.) entitled War Relics and Reminiscences (these form a supplement to Cronin's autobiography, The Evolution of A Life, Described in the Memoirs of Major Seth Eyland, published in 1884) compiled by Cronin in the late 1880s and completed in 1892; The Cavalry Album (10 lin. ft.), a similar collection of correspondence, orders, reminiscences, portraits, sketches, newspaper clippings and histories of various Civil War cavalry unions; approximately 200 letters (.5 lin. ft.) from Cronin to his friend, patron and collaborator Daniel Parish, Jr., 1887-1909; and a number of hand illustrated manuscripts and volumes (1 lin. ft.)"
  • "Additional Civil War material compiled by Cronin can be found in a seperate collection entitled "First New York Mounted Rifles, Papers, 1864-865" in the New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department. This collection contains records from Troop C, including vouchers, lists of stores, returns of clothing and quartermasters' stores, ordnance lists, and receipts for issues. For additional information see The New-York Historical Society Quarterly Bulletin, vol. XXV, January-October 1941 (pp. 17-25)."
  • "The Cavalry Album contains a less organized, but similar assortment of material covering analogous subjects. This series covers such topics as Pennsylvania, New York and U.S. cavalry units; reminiscences, correspondence and portraits of Confederate officers, Union soldiers and officers, and Union Army nurses; photographs of soldiers and camp scenes; drawings; post-war correspondence; newspaper clippings; and proceedings of veterans' reunions. The time span of this series is similar to that of War Relics and Reminiscences. A box list is available for The Cavalry Album."
  • "Four substantial sub-series appear in War Relics and Reminiscences, containing war-time letters donated to Cronin by veterans of the First New York Mounted Rifles. Along with post-war correspondence and sketches, these letters written to friends and family of the soldiers provide rich information on camp life, field duties, recreation, diet, medical care, desertions and prisoners, bounties and enlistments, politics, slavery, and skirmishes. These sub-series have been separately cataloged under the following titles: The Samuel and Francis Budd Letters; the Edwin Parker Letters; the Thomas Turner Letters; and the John Wagner Letters."
  • "The five volumes include four basic forms of material: portraits of soldiers and illustrations of war scenes in ink sketches and watercolors done by Cronin specifically for the volume; post-war correspondence sent to Cronin by veterans who frequently enclosed reminiscences, photographs, war letters and diaries; official military orders, both original and transcribed; and war-time diaries and correspondence. Cronin organized the material in two alphabetical sequences by surname. The first group contains information on commissioned officers, the second includes non-commissioned officer and soldiers. After each portrait sketch, Cronin placed all letters, orders, and other documents related to the individual. A detailed calendar is available for this section of the Cronin Papers."
