When the town of Cottonwood, Kansas, passed a curfew and a ban on the wearing of firearms in hopes of averting the violence that always accompanied the annual spring arrival of trail-weary cowboys, Marshal Morgan Gaunt knew he would have a hard time upholding the new law--and knew also that in one of the crews there would be a man who had sworn to return to Cottonwood to kill him.
