At the centre of Preminger's only western, an assignment from Fox, is the relationship that develops during the course of a journey between a poor farmer (Mitchum) and a bar girl (Monroe), arguably the most satisfyingly worked through relationship in a Monroe film. Preminger uses the shallowness and width of Scope to continually place the characters together in the frame on one or two planes, an implacably objective camera style. Preminger's approach, involving long takes and minimal use of the subjective shot that by its very nature favours one point-of-view over another, is attuned to the open image facilitated by the Scope format."@en
