Einstein's unfinished symphony

To mark the 100th anniversary of Einstein's special theory of relativity and his discovery that E=MC2, Horizon mixes drama and documentary to tell the story of how Einstein spent the last years of his life trying to produce a theory that would disprove the implications of much of his earlier work. It was a struggle that lasted right up until the day he died. At the heart of this film is the conflict between the rational, objective scientist and Einstein the dreamer, the man who believed that he would one day find a way to read the mind of God.

  • "Einstein's Unfinished Symphony is a film that looks at how, even when Albert Einstein lay on his deathbed, he asked only for his glasses, his writing implements and his latest equations. He knew he was dying, yet he continued his work. In those fading hours of his life, while fading in and out of consciousness, he was working on what he hoped would be his greatest work of all. It was a project of monumental complexity and that he hoped would unlock the mind of God. But as he lay dying in the Princeton Hospital he must have understood that these were secrets that God was clearly keen to hang on to. The greatest scientist of his age died knowing that he had become isolated from the scientific community ; revered on the one hand and ridiculed for this quest on the other."@en
  • "Revolted by quantum theory, Einstein spent his final decades trying to create and all-emcompassing mathematical model of the universe in which God indeed does not play dice. In this program, theoretical physicist Michio Kaku and experts from Cambridge, MIT, and elsewhere discuss Einstein's revolutionary time/space theories of 1905, the ascendancy of quantum mechanics and string theory, and Einstein's unswerving belief that the laws of nature--elegant and precise--must reveal a universe of divine predictability down to the last subatomic particle. A gripping dramatization fo Einstein's last two days paints a vivid portrait of an idealistic scientist who never gave up seeking."
  • "Recounts Einstein's writing of On the electrodynamics of moving bodies, which explicates his special theory of relativity, thus forever changing the world's understanding of time. Incorporates a dramatic interpretation of Einstein's final two days."
