"The first movement, Des choses comme ça ("Such things") is set on a garish cruise ship travelling the Mediterranean, and features multi-lingual conversations among a medley collection of passengers. Godard contrasts the rich and conflicted history of the ship's ancient itinerary with the ostentacious gluttony of its well-to-do passengers. Characters include an aging war criminal, a former UN official, and a Russian detective, with a brief cameo appearance by American singer Patti Smith. The second movement, Notre Europe ("Our Europe"), is set at a gas station/rest stop, whose owners, seeking to change their fate, are running for office. It is their discontented children, however, who point towards an alternative future. The girl and her younger brother summon their parents to appear before the "tribunal of their childhood," demanding serious answers on the themes of liberty, equality, and fraternity. The final movement, Nos humanités ("Our humanities"), in a glorious, aggrieved montage that acts as an idiosyncratic history of the West, layering images of art and conflict in an attempt to wring some sense out of the past and future of the region.
