"The Cenci (1819) is Shelley's dramatic retelling of the legend of Beatrice Cenci, the beautiful and innocent daughter of a roman nobleman, who is raped by her father and seeks justice by murdering him. The murder plot, the commission and discovery of the crime, and the trial of Beatrice and her accomplices, form the basis for Shelley's powerful tragedy. -- Back cover."
"Tragedie over een Italiaanse familie waarbinnen in 1599 incest tot moord leidt."
"This is a verse drama written in the summer of 1819, and inspired by a real Italian family, the Cencis. Shelley composed the play at Rome and at Villa Valsovano near Livorno, from May to 5 August 1819. The work was published by Charles and James Ollier, in London in 1819. Shelley sought to have the play staged, describing it as totally different from anything you might conjecture that he should write; of a more popular kind written for the multitude. The play was not considered performable in its day due to its themes of incest and parricide, and was not performed in public in England until 1922 when it was staged in London. This is part of the TREDITION CLASSICS series which contains classical literature works from over two thousand years. Most of these titles have been out of print and off the bookstore shelves for decades. The book series is intended to preserve the cultural legacy and to promote the timeless works of classical literature. Readers of a TREDITION CLASSICS book support the mission to save many of the amazing works of world literature from oblivion. With this series, tredition intends to make thousands of international literature classics available in printed format again - worldwide."
