Tokyo boshoku Tokyo twilight

Ozu's only postwar film to take place in the dead of winter tells of an aging father and his two daughters. The younger has an affair and becomes pregnant. The elder has left her husband and returned with her child to her father. Both are astonished when their mother, presumed dead, turns up alive. In this dark film, Ozu's vision of post-war Japan portrays his theme of the sins of one generation affecting the next, illustrated brilliantly by a series of parallels drawn sensitively between characters, which manages to be both compassionate and scathing. Even the seemingly happy ending has an embedded twist. It depicts Ozu's harsh condemnation of modern Japanese society and family life.
