Photographs

Photographs and picture postcards pertaining to the service of John A. Auby Jr. of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin a medic with the 329th Air Force Service Group, 42nd Service Squadron, in the North African campaign of World War II. The bulk of this collection consists of photographs concerning military life and the soldier as "tourist" and primarily are informal shots taken in North Africa and India. These photographs and picture postcards are of soldiers, military vehicles, United Service Organizations' performers, buildings, street scenes, and interactions with natives. Locations depicted include: Nouvion and Oran (Algeria), Myitkyina (Burma), Cairo (Egypt), the Brahmaputra River, Dinjan, and Jorhat (India), Mesagen and Casablanca (Morocco), Naples and Palermo (Italy), Messina (Sicily), Tunisia, and various other locations. Soldiers are identified on some of the photographs of this collection. They include: Al Castleman, Conner, Bob Link, McBride, Parcell, Waddell, and Captains Alpert, Burke, and Reas. Photographs depicting military vehicles include tank landing ships, jeeps, a B-25 bomber, disabled Sherman tank, and military motorcycle. Unique photographs documenting interaction with natives include soldiers and Indian natives on an elephant and soldiers eating dinner with Algerians. Of special note are photographs of Egyptian Bedouins praying in the desert, India's Gurkha troops, a Koran school meeting, and a snake charmer. Of the photographs depicting United Service Organizations' shows is one of the contortionist Betty Yeaton, actor Pat O'Brien and actress Jinx Falkenberg. Of special note among the photographs depicting military life are soldiers: playing volleyball in Nouvian, working in an instrument trailer, traveling on Brahmaputra River boat, and celebrating the New Year of 1945. One unique military photograph of this collection depicts two field toilets placed next to a downed German aircraft on which a picture of Adolph Hitler is affixed to it along with the words, "Shit House Boss." Another unique photograph is of an officer and a nurse pointing and laughing at a mural on a wall that depicts a nurse giving a shot in the buttocks to an American soldier while others laugh. None of the postcards have written messages on the reverse side. There is one humorous postcard that is a cartoon of a soldier sitting on a balloon kissing a girl while an MP tries to climb the rope.
