  • "The collection contains books, correspondence, miscellaneous papers and photographs gathered by Mary Conrad Stevenson, former head of Cataloging in the Clemson University Library. When she began research, in 1959, on the portraits of John C. Calhoun for an exhibit at the library, she restarted her research on portraits in 1974 after retiring from the library in 1968. Two copies of a book entitled, A History of the Calhoun Monument at Charleston, S.C., in which there are handwritten annotations, are in the collection. The correspondence includes letters of inquiry between Mrs. Stevenson and art galleries and museums pertaining to the location of artistic works of John C. Calhoun and requests of photographs of those works of art. The miscellaneous papers contain biographical information about the artists. There are black and white photographs of miniatures, portraits and status depicting Calhoun. The majority of the collection is alphabetically arranged in folders by artist's name."
