Drift and movement of pack ice in the Beaufort Sea, April 1990 - March 1991

The ice subsurface characterization project, a multi-year study of the motion and thickness of sea ice in the Beaufort Sea, was begun in April 1990. This report presents the measurements made during the first field year of the project, from April 1990 to March 1991. Observations were made using a four-beam Doppler sonar to measure the velocity of ice movement over the mooring and a narrow-beam ice profiling sonar to measure ice draft. Two sites on the Mackenzie continental shelf north of Tuktoyaktuk were instrumented, One near the middle of the shelf, and the other near the shelf edge. Ice motion measurements were obtained at both sites at all times during the 12-month deployment when sea ice was present. Measurements of ice draft were obtained only at the northern site during April and May 1990. From this location, a topographic profile across almost 350 km of sea ice was surveyed at 1 metre intervals. This profile and a variety of statistical measures of the thickness, topography, and motion of the ice field are presented.
