Production and escapement of coho salmon from the Chilkat River, 2004-2005
The purpose of this study was to conduct a full stock assessment of Chilkat River coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch. Coho salmon smolt were captured in the Chilkat River during spring 2004, marked with an adipose fin clip and a coded wire tag (CWT), and sampled for age, weight, and length. In 2005, adult coho salmon were sampled for CWTs in recreational and commercial fisheries harvests throughout southeast Alaska, and in the Chilkat River to determine the marked fraction. In addition, the escapement of adult coho salmon to the Chilkat River in 2005 was estimated by a mark-recapture experiment.
