The Meatu Project in western Tanzania (East Africa) is a collaborative effort between a Swiss yarn trader, Switzerland's second largest supermarket chain and 500 farming families in the cultivation of organic cotton. The industrial production of cotton is one of the world's greatest environmental and social disasters but this project has proved that organic cotton production is a viable model for creating a long-term future for small farmers in developing countries.
