After the death of their mother, three children and their widower father select an "electric grandmother," a robot, on a thirty-day trial period to see if it will bring the family together again.
"A gentle and affecting film featuring Maureen Stapleton as a magical, ageless grandmother whose warmth transforms a skeptical little girl and brings love to a motherless home. In beautiful visual sequence, the children go through various stages of growth until, as adults, they no longer need their grandmother. Time passes, and the children, now aged, again seek her help."
"A recently widowed father hires an electric grandmother to care for his three children. When the grandmotherly robot arrives from Mr. Fantoccini's workshop, she amazes the family with her unusual skills which include pouring beverages with her finger and hanging wash from a kite. The young daughter alone remains unimpressed until the grandmother acts on her promise that, "I'll always be here when you need me."

"Summary: When their mother dies, Tom, Timothy and Agatha are devastated. At first their home is invaded by their father's sister, who proves a poor substitute, but one day they are offered an opportunity to place an order for an electric grandmother, built according to their own specifications. The two boys and their father are soon won over by the loving and capable machine that arrives, but Agatha, who is convinced that, like her mother, the new granny will eventually leave them, proves a tougher proposition. It needs a crisis situation to resolve the matter and the film ends with the threesome, now old and grey, once again calling upon their unchanged grandmother to help them through their remaining years. This version of Ray Bradbury's "I sing the body electric" features Maureen Stapleton as the electric grandmother and Edward Herrmann as the children's father. Awards: American Film Festival, New York."
