Multiple bonds between metal atoms

The existence of quadruple bonds between transition metal atoms was first recognized in 1964, and since then several thousand compounds containing these and related types of multiple bonds have been prepared and characterized. In this completely new and revised edition of the first monograph on the subject, the authors describe the full course of development of the chemistry of these compounds. A research literature of over 2000 publications is surveyed completely to the end of 1990, and key developments in 1991 and early 1992 are also included. The work covers all relevant classes of compounds and also discusses the theoretical, spectroscopic, and thermodynamic aspects of these relatively new and distinctive types of bond. A historical introduction is followed by chapters devoted to each of the elements or homologous pairs of elements that play a major role, as well as overviews of other classes of compounds. A detailed account of the underlying bonding theory and the related spectroscopic observations concludes the book.

  • "Ince the second edition of this book there has been so much published in the ? eld that Stwo points seemed clear. One was a sense that a new, up-to-date monograph was needed. The other was the reluctance of two or even three people to undertake the daunting task of covering all the ground. Our response was to call on others to help and, thus, to produce the present, multiauthored volume. Each of the contributing authors was in a position to write - thoritatively, from hands-on research experience. We are con? dent that this has led to a better book than the three of us would have produced. As always in a book where different chapters are written by different authors, there is some variation in style and we chose not to try to smooth it all out. In every chapter the objective has been to be comprehensive, if not encyclopedic. Putting it a little differently, we, and the other authors, have aimed to mention all pertinent literature references, although the amount of emphasis accorded each paper necessarily varies. Since the volume of literature to cover is now so large, a few topics that might have been included (or were in the second edition) have been omitted or are covered only in limited detail."
  • "Provides a discussion of preparations, reactions, bonding, and physical properties for two of the d-block transition metals in groups 5-10. This title includes catalytic and chemotherapeutic applications, and discusses metal-metal bonds of orders 0.5 to 4 discussed in than 4000 compounds, with citations to approximately 2500 references."@en
