This book positions civil liberties' protection in the light of the Human Rights Act 1998 and the standards of human rights protection laid down, principally, by the European Convention on Human Rights and its case law.; In part one, students are introduced to the meaning and scope of civil liberties, the reasons for their recognition and enforcement, the machinery available for redress and, equally importantly, the reasons why civil liberties need to be restricted, including the limitations of those restrictions. Part two looks at specific areas of civil liberties in context. This encourages students to appreciate the tension between civil liberties and their legal protection, and to develop an understanding of the techniques used in domestic and international law to balance such liberties with other rights and interests."
