A descriptive profile of the assault incident
This report is an abstract of a far more lengthy document which was designed to describe a set of characteristics which most clearly typify events in which police officers are assaulted. To obtain a descriptive profile of those characteristics, 37 municipal law enforcement agencies in five southwestern states were asked to submit a complete report on all assault incidents occurring within their respective agencies for January 1, 1973 to December 31, 1973. A total of 1143 incidents were reported for 1973. A general descriptive profile was developed that included the following assault dimensions: officer characteristics; assailant characteristics; the assault environment; and the dynamic of the assault event.
