"Summary: Set in a small asbestos mining town in Quebec during the mid-forties, this film focusses on the experiences of a young boy who is being brought up by his uncle, the owner of the general store, who doubles as the local undertaker. Most of the action takes place on Christmas eve, a time when the store becomes the nerve centre of village life. Benoit observes and takes part in some of the goings-on, while conducting a mild flirtation with the young salesgirl who lives with them. Through his relationship with others he begins to understand the realities of the adult world, brought to a head when he accompanies his uncle on a long sleigh ride to collect the body of a boy who has died on a farm in the district. On the way back the coffin slides into the snow and, with his uncle in a drunken stupor, Benoit drives on to summon help and comes upon a liaison between his aunt and the store clerk. It is a familiar story of a boy's initiation into manhood and the way he learns about the frailties of others, but done with a timelessness and sense of place that makes it both universal and unique. Directed by Claude Jutra from a screenplay by Clément Perron, it was photographed by Michel Brault. It is regarded as one of the best Canadian features to date and has been favourably compared to Truffaut's "The 400 blows". Please note that it is not suitable for showing to children.
