"The film opens in 1949 as an American woman, Helene Hanff, is making her first trip to London. She is a collector of rare books and has carried on a twenty year correspondence with an antiquarian bookseller in London, his colleagues and family. Structured in flashbacks around the letters which form the basis of Hanff's memoirs, the film is touchingly sentimental, humorously observant, and obviously literary in conception. The austerity of postwar London is contrasted with the relative affluence of New York.
