A scuola viene derisa dai compagni anche perchè non ha ancora imparato a leggere e scrivere. A casa la madre non solo non la difende dalle violenze paterne ma la accusa di averglielo rubato oltre a cercare di ostacolare in ogni modo i suoi tentativi di riscatto dall'ignoranza. Precious però, solo apparentemente ottusa, tiene duro. Accetta l'offerta di iscriversi a una scuola con un programma speciale dove finalmente comincia ad apprendere come leggere e scrivere e, soprattutto, decide di tenere il bambino.
