"Based on the book of the same title by David Macaulay. This version presents only the animated portion of the original film -- the story of Aberwyven, a 13th century fortress built by King Edward I as part of the effort to bring Wales into the English nation. To construct this "modern" military machine, more than 3,000 workers are used over six years. Soon after completion, the castle faces the test of what it was built for -- a Welsh attack. As "Castle" unfolds, the fortress eventually falls into ruin as the growing town around it succeeds in achieving Edward's goal of bringing peace and unity to the countryside."
"Live-action footage and animated sequences are used to chronicle the design, contruction and ultimate decay of an imaginary castle at Aberwyvern in Wales. The castle is based on those built by Edward I in the 13th century to subdue the Welsh and incorporate them into the English realm. The story, presented in animation, opens as the medieval architect Master James of Babbington plans to build a castle on Lord Kevin LeStrange's fiefdom in Wales. The castle is designed to protect the English from Prince Daffyd of Gwynedd and his Welsh rebels. As the building of the castle proceeds, the program interweaves details of architecture, building materials, schedules, workers, finances, defenses, urban trades, townspeople, aristocracy, lifestyles and military strategy."
