"Over the hedge centers on the unlikely friendship between a worldly and mischievous raccoon named R.J. and a timid turtle named Verne. When R.J. Verne and their woodland friends find a suburban housing development encroaching on their forest home Vernes first instinct is to retreat into his shell and leave. But the ever opportunistic R.J. sees a treasure trove to be had from his unsuspecting new neighbours. Together Verne and R.J. learn to co exist with and even exploit this strange new world called suburbia."

"As spring arrives, Vincent the bear catches RJ the raccoon stealing his food reserves. Inadvertently all the food gets destroyed. Vincent gives RJ a limited amount of time to replace the food or face dire consequences. Meanwhile, a group of animals led by Verne the turtle is dismayed to find that a suburban development was built while they were hibernating, replacing half the forest and severely limiting their food supply. RJ arrives on the scene and encourages the animals to steal food from the humans, while his real plan is to use them to help him repay his debt to Vincent. Led by RJ, the animals go over the hedge that separates the housing development from the forest in search of nachos and other human junk foods."
