David and Lisa

When 17-year-old David meets 15-year-old Lisa in a school for the mentally disturbed, a friendship between the two seems unlikely. Yet David, suffering from a fear of being touched, is drawn to Lisa, whose schizophrenic personality swings between that of a coquettish four-year-old and a demure, mute adolescent.

  • "Boy-meets-girl in a school for adolescents requiring psychiatric help. Independently made, Frank and Eleanor Perry's first feature won praise and awards on festival and art house circuits for its sensitivity and assurance. It has also subsequently won praise for its psychiatric discourse with many psychiatrists reportedly still referring to this film as one of the most "realistic" depictions of psychiatric treatment although this praise may also be a self-serving tribute to Da Silva's sympathetically low key performance as the psychiatrist. At the time, the Perrys' film was path-breaking in its attempt to abandon Hollywood myths about psychoanalysis and the role of the family in the representation of mental illness as an aberration in an otherwise homogeneous culture."@en
