Stander

Deeply affected by the indiscriminate killing he witnesses as a white police officer in South Africa, Andre Stander (Tom Jane) makes a decision to defy the very system he has spent a lifetime enforcing. Turning his back on the law, he masterminds a series of audacious bank robberies and with two other outlaws goes on a cross-country robbing spree. Known ony as the "Stander Gang," the three commit dozens of bank robberies - heists that grow increasingly bolder over time. In the eyes of the public, the gang's disrespect for authority makes them into near-legendary folk heroes. To the South African government, however, the former police officer is a cause of embarrassment, and the Gang members quickly become the most wanted men in the country.

  • ""Based on the true story of André Stander, a South African homicide/robbery police captain who became one of the most notorious bank robbers in the country. After participating in [a] brutal killing in a riot in the line of duty, Stander decided to defy the very system [of apartheid of which] he was [a] part, and set off on an audacious crime spree, robbing banks during his lunch hour, then returning to the scene of the crime to lead the investigation. Finally, caught by the same police force he worked with, he was jailed and, subsequently befriended Allan Heyl and Lee McCall. After a daring jailbreak, the Stander Gang committed a large number of robberies, which grew increasingly bold over time. In the eyes of the public, their blatant disregard for authority made them South Africa's most popular anti-heroes. In reality, however, Stander and his gang were the most wanted men in the country"--Internet movie database, as viewed on January 11, 2007."
