"Prophetically, the story in this landmark science fiction begins with the outbreak of World War II in 1940, shifts to the mid-sixties when Everytown is in ruins and ruled by a warlord and finally to 2036 where Everytown is a peaceful, prosperous but uninspiring technological Utopia. The characters, particularly Cabal, are little more than mouthpieces for Wells' now dated philosophising (he had a naive faith in science and scientists). The special effects are sometimes clumsy and the drama tends to be ponderous - it has been re-edited several times. What is still striking is a remarkable coherence and consistency of design, a certain visual grandeur which reflects Menzies' background as one of Hollywood's leading set designers."@en
