  • "Ballade vom Weg (1.
  • "An examination of daily life and the impact of poverty in rural Bengal, inspired by the Italian neo realist films that Satyajit Ray had seen as a student. The first part of a trilogy of films, Pather Panchali is set entirely in the village of Apu's childhood. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Satyajit Ray had studied painting for three years with Rabindranath Tagore. Then, while working as a commercial artist, he was hired to illustrate the novel Pather Panchali, which he decided to adapt to film. Unable to find the financial backing to produce Pather Panchali, Satyajit Ray shot the film at night and on weekends. His cameraman was a young musician Subrata Mitra, who had some experience with still photography. Filming began in 1952, but was interrupted several times due to lack of funds. Completion funds were provided by the West Bengal government. The second and third parts of the trilogy (Aparajito and The World of Apu) were completed in 1956 and 1958."
  • "Story of a rural family cursed with bad luck. Father Hari is a dreamer and poet, while his hard-working wife struggles to feed the family. But Durga, a free-spirited and petty thief, brings tragedy to the family in a moment's carelessness."
  • "First part of a trilogy by Indian director Satyajit Ray concerning the fortunes of a poor family in a Bengali village."
  • "Ray's first film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel. It is set entirely in the village of Apu's childhood - his relationship with the members of his family form the film's centre. Ray paid a great deal of attention to authenticity - capturing the rambling way of life in a Bengali village something he had not experienced first hand. It subsequently grew into a trilogy whose episodic naturalism challenged the plot-driven melodramatic mode of the dominant Hindu cinema without displacing it. Paher Panchali was not the first Indian film to do so (see Two Acres of Land) but Ray's naturalism is more assured than Bimal Roy's and had more international impact."
  • "First part of the Apu Trilogy, Satyajit Ray's chronicle of a Bengali family and the boy Apu. Deals with the family's life in their ancestral village as the father struggles to eke out a living and makes his decision to move them to Benares, and hopefully, a better future."
