Henry's purpose is to nominate his successor, who will then marry Alais to keep England's power in France intact. All parties engage in a power struggle to secure the succession, Eleanor backing Richard and Henry favoring John. Henry decides to marry Alais himself and father another son, but she refuses while his other sons are alive. Eleanor convinces him that he cannot kill his children and she returns to prison."
