  • "Sommaire: Demonstrates the physical examination of the neck vessels and the heart, showing necessary procedures, manipulations, pacing, positions, and patient-examiner interaction."
  • "Begins with a brief introduction to this aspect of cardiovascular examination, and a graphic display of the anatomy of the carotid artery and the internal and external jugular veins. The examiner positions the patient properly, inspects the neck for carotid artery pulsations, palpitates the carotid pulse on one side at a time, then auscultates for brutis in these areas using the bell of the stethoscope. Then, the examiner uses tangential lighting to inspect the internal and external jugular veins. The examiner estimates jugular venous pressure by measuring the vertical distance between the sternal angle and the highest point of the internal jugular pulsation. Compare jugular veins and carotid artery in another patient. Provides a graphic review of the structures and anatomical landmarks of the heart. The examiner inspects the precordium and looks for the apical pulse. The examiner then palpitates for pulsations in the right second, left second, and left third interspaces. Then the examiner palpitates the apical impulse, noting its location, diameter, amplitude, and duration. Presents a graphic review of the processes that produce normal heart sounds, then the examiner auscultates the heart at each location in the sequence using the diaphragm and bell. The examiner listens for aortic regurgitation, diastolic, and systolic murmurs."
