In 1942, the Japanese invaded the Philippines and Bataan, then under General MacArthur fell. The General retreated leaving Colonel Joseph Madden (John Wayne) and his outfit stranded. Madden and Captain Andres Bonifacio (Anthony Quinn) of the Philippine Scouts held down the fort and harrassed the Japanese occupation forces until General MacArthur's triumphant return.
