Many of the drawings originally appeared in St. Nicholas Magazine and Ladies Home Journal from 1883-1895 and in sixteen books, 1887-1925. There are four discrete groups of drawings and three discrete single drawings in this collection."

The image shows a group of brownies standing adjacent to a group of alligator skins that they use to disguise themselves to explore the island. The drawing also appears in "Another Brownie Book" published by the Century Company, New York, 1890. The verso of each of the boards includes a stamp for the art department of the Century Company, as well as the signature and ownership stamps of Murray A. Harris, an art collector in North Hollywood and Simi Valley, California."

An additional image not used in the published story, showing brownies riding atop the whale, appeared in "Another Brownie Book" published by the Century Company, New York, 1890. The verso of each of the boards includes an ink stamp for the art department of the Century Company."
