  • "This experimental film was the first to realize the tenets of German Expressionism as it had developed in literature, theater, and the arts. It is the story of Dr. Caligari, head of an insane asylum, who directs his somnambulist victim out on abduction and murder rampages at night, and himself ends up in a straightjacket. The special qualities of the film are primarily linked to the production design, with painted backdrops that create distortions to suggest the mystery and horror that dominated Expressionist cinema. Silent with English intertitles. B&W."

  • "One of the most important films in cinema history, and one that exercised a considerable and lasting influence. Produced during a period when expressionism and cubism were doctrines of the advanced schools of the art, it was a revelation. Its amazing use of deliberaterly-distorted backdrops, and high contrasts in lighting are all designed to accent the terror of its story. In it, the audience shares the experiences of a madman and is carried into a world of unreality and escape."@en

  • "Starring the remarkable silent film actor Conrad Veidt, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is a tale of the reappearance of an 11th century myth involving the strange and mysterious influence of a Mountebank monk over a somnambulist. A deranged Dr. Caligari and his faithful sleepwalking Cesare are connected to a series of murders in a German mountain village, Holstenwall. The narrator, Francis, and his friend Alan visit a carnival in the village where they see Dr. Caligari and the somnambulist Cesare, whom the doctor is displaying as an attraction. Caligari brags that Cesare can answer any question he is asked. When Alan asks Cesare how long he has to live, Cesare tells Alan that he will die before dawn, a prophecy which is fulfilled. The film's reputation is based on its position in the development of expressionism in the German cinema. The style of design, in particular sets painted flat with distortions of perspective, emphasized by grotesque lighting, became known as "Caligarism" and had a great influence on German films of the next decade. Writers Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer met each other in Berlin soon after World War I. The two men considered the new film medium a new type of visual storytelling that necessitated collaboration between writers and painters, cameramen, actors and directors. They felt that film was the ideal medium through which to call attention to the emerging pacifism in postwar Germany."@en
