http://schema.org/description

  • "The selection of poems included in this volume represents a range of styles (from odes in a Classic manner to epistles and elegies) and subjects (including political commentaries, poems on social issues, and religious and philosophical declarations). Of note are poems opposing the treatment of slaves, and addressing European colonial expansion in Africa and the genocide of Native Americans."
  • "The commonplace book also contains annotations in pencil, by an unidentified hand, providing identification and contextual notes for many poems. Among other markings in the volume are the apparent mark of a subsequent owner, "Sieur Lentheaume, orfèvre à Crest", a page of doodles and calculations, and short notes on the front endpages."
  • "Commonplace book containing ca. 617 pages of manuscript poems, all apparently in the same hand, along with a 7 page index to the contents (arranged by page number). The contents are a mix of identified and unidentified works. Among the known attributions are poems by Jean Passerat, Nicolas Boileau, Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle, Mathurin Régnier, Dorat, Delille, La Harpe, Favart, Gilbert, Bernis, Voltaire, Chamfort, and Sedaine, along with a number of lesser-known poets, such as Paul Desforges-Maillard and André Hyacinthe Sabatier de Cavaillon. A portion of the unattributed poems in the book may be by the owner, possibly Jean-André Perreáu, (1749-1813) professor of law at the Collège de France and author of legal works, plays and novels."
