  • "Eighteen autograph letters, chiefly by musical composers and performers, with dates between 1796 and 1874. Apparently removed from an autograph album (some letters are still mounted in the original album leaves with ms biographical annotations concerning their author). Includes a letter from Charles Burney to Samuel Rose, dated June 30, 1796, discussing the specifications for a pitchpipe commissioned by a Mr. Christopher Young, and an enquiry concerning double basses, on which Burney had apparently consulted the double bass player and publisher George Smart. Also of interest are a letter from William Sterndale Bennett to the publisher Friedrich Kistner, which refers to Mendelssohn, and a letter in French from M. W. Balfe to Henri Saint-Georges, and, outside the musical sphere, a letter by William Henry Fox Talbot to the artist Henry Collen, and a letter by Sir Rowland Hill."
